Removing pauses by hand means scrubbing a waveform, finding each gap, trimming it and closing the space — for every gap, on every take. This is the one job that is fully mechanical, which is why it is the one worth automating first.
The short version
- Open the editor and drop your recording in. The file is read from your computer; nothing is uploaded.
- The silence cut runs immediately. You get a list of the takes it found and a preview that already plays cut.
- Adjust how long a pause has to be before it counts. This is the only dial that matters, and it is the one below the preview.
- Check the list, put back anything you disagree with, and export.
The one setting that matters
Everything else is preset for you, but the pause length is a real editorial choice, and no default is right for every video.
Short threshold — every breath goes. The result is dense and fast, which suits Reels and Shorts, and can sound rushed for anything explanatory.
Long threshold — only real gaps go. The video keeps its rhythm and stays longer.
Change it and watch the preview: the cut is recalculated instantly, on your machine, so there is no waiting to see the result of a different answer.
What silence cutting cannot do
It cannot tell a false start from a sentence, because a false start is not silent. If you said the first line three times, all three survive the silence cut — they are speech.
Removing those requires reading what was said. In NinjaClip that is a separate step, it needs a free account, and only the audio is sent for it. There is a measured comparison of the two in how much time this actually saves.
Before you export
- Listen to the seams. A cut that lands mid-breath sounds abrupt. Putting back one segment usually fixes a seam that bothers you.
- Watch the jump cuts. Removing a pause leaves the speaker in a different position between two adjacent frames. Turning on reframing hides most of these, because the framing changes at the same instant as the cut — the change of shot is what makes a jump cut read as a decision.
- Decide about captions. Cut videos move fast, and captions are what make them followable without sound.
Cutting pauses is free here and needs no account, because it runs entirely in your browser. You can open a recording, see the result and close the tab without leaving anything behind.
